Port numbers, SSL, and TLS -- Partial answer

I have seached the Options for XanaNews, but find no mention of ports,
SSL, or TLS.
I found NNTP port assignment in Acocunt Properties > Dial up and
Connection. That's good. SSL is mentioned, which is also good, but
there is nothing regarding TLS or SMTP.

Xananews does not do mail anymore. That function was removed a long
time ago. I'm not sure what TLS though.

Following is a copy of the message I sent directly to BadGolferMan
using the XanaNews command Mail Reply. I am posting it here just in
case the email message did not arrive.

Hi,

If I am understanding you correctly, you are saying that XanaNews no
longer functions as an email reader. (a.k.a. email client). If so, that
is not what I meant.

I was referring to the command Mail Reply (to usenet message). I'm
using it right now to send this to you. I entered my email address in
XanaNews using the command Tools > Identities..., but could not specify
the ports Yahoo uses for SSL. I presume XanaNews defaulted to no SLL on
port 25.

Outgoing mail generated by this command uses SMTP, so it seems
reasonable that I should be able to configure it. In particular, I
should be able to set a port and specify SSL and/or TLS.

FYI: TLS (transport-layer security) is the new, improved version of
SSL. If you don't already know about it, check Wikipedia. (That's what
I had to do!)

Thanks again for helping out.

Does that mean that I have the command misconfigured, or does it mean
that the button "Mail Reply," the dialog that follows, and the MS
Outlook pop up that advises "attempting to send" all do nothing?

Presuming the former, can you hazzard a guess why the mail did not
work. I am trying again, but this time, my email client, MS Outlook, is
open and ready to receive.

Evidentally, the reason that Mail Reply did not work is beacuse your
email address contains REMOVETHIS. (I may be slow, but eventually I
notice these things.)

I'm trying again by email.

If this mail gets through to you, then my configuration question
remains. The answer, however, may be simple. Does XanaNews simply
forward the email to my email client, relying on it to configure SMTP?

This time the message arrived via e-mail. I cannot answer your
question, relying completely on my memory of Xananews using its own
mail client to send messages at one time. I do know that functionality
was eventually removed, either by the original author or by those who
took over the project later.

There are some other people that use this newsgroup, including the
current author Pieter. He may be able to shed some more light on your
questions.

By the way, in the other newsgroup that you came from it is desirable
to use fixed font to view the diagrams. Simply click on the F button
located on the Message toolbar to toggle back and forth between Fixed
and your Default fonts.

badgolferman,

I tried to send you a reply by e-mail using my slightly older version
of XN. It would NOT send. All I could do was abort the compose window
using the "X" icon.
