I am using XanaNews 1.19.1.320 on a Windows XP machine.
I cannot figure out how to download all the newsgroups stored at
news.eternal-september.org. All I can see is the ten newsgroups that
start with "eternal-september.....".

Things I have tried:
1) Verified multiple times that the option "This server requires me to
log on" is checked.
2) Right-clicked E-S's server and selected either "Refresh group list"
or "Show newsgroup list".
3) Verified multiple times that I am using the correct user name and
password. I am able to download the newsgroups using Outlook Express
Newsreader with the current user name and password, so...
4) Deleted and re-created multiple times the news.eternal-september.org
account.
5) Closed and restarted XanaNews a bazillion times after having done
any of the items 1-4 above!!

I have added six other news accounts to XanaNews just to see if they
work fine. And they do! The only one not working is Eternal
September...

Thanks.

Always authenticate [checked]
It works! Thank you very much for your help.

The funny thing is that I am using a couple of other NNTP servers that
require to login; they work just fine without having the "Always
authenticate" checked...

Ah, but E-S allows for both authenticated and non-authenticated access
(NA restricted to their own groups), so you have to tell the client
which mode you want. Most servers with logins probably refuse
non-authenticated access.

The main difference is that when "Always authenticate" is switched on it will login when it connects to the server. This may be needed to be able to see (all private) groups that are usually only available when you have an account.

When "Always authenticate" is switched off it will only provide the login credentials when the server specifically asks for it. For instance there are some servers that only requires this information when posting a message.

I'm using a different newsreader, but you might as well try what
worked for me - try step 1 above, then step 5.

Also note that E-S has recently had a problem with letting you
download any new headers at all. I didn't check if this problem
also prevented downloading the full list of newsgroups.

Now that the problem I know about is fixed, you might as well
try again to see if your problem is fixed also.
