I would like to see "Mark as Read" and/or "Mark Deleted" added to or
replacing the two existing option actions.

In most newsgroups I download headers only and then get the messages I
want to see based on a read of the header information. Any of the ones
that are compressed multi-part attachment I simply mark as deleted. The
problem is sometimes this means holding down the delete key while 1200,
2000 or more message headers are marked as deleted. It sure would be nice
to simply have a filter where if "Subject matches *.rar*" [the subject has
the text ".rar" somewhere in it] the message is automajically marked as
read and deleted.

Is there a popularly used scenario where "Don't Download" works?

If you select "Don't Display" wouldn't you prefer to delete it from your
.dat store?

How are you using filtering of messages? Perhaps I can get to where I
want to go without new features.

"Mark Deleted" is similar but to the current bit more aggressive "Don't Download" option of the Filters.

Yes, that would work for instance in the scenario you described here above. It will still download the headers and when a Subject contains ".rar" it will be thrown away immediately.

I don't use that one much, but I read it as - Don't display now, but I may want to access it later for whatever reason.

I sometimes use the "Don't Download" option in "binaries" to throw away all headers that doesn't contain a specific word/phrase in the Subject line.

In other groups I use the non-permanent filter option of the Search bar (menu View -> Toolbars -> Search Bar (H)).

I think adding "Mark as Read" makes sense, but I'm also interested in other opinions / user scenario's.

Note that:
- I always download full articles of the text-only groups and the smaller binary/attachments groups.
- I only use download headers for some of the humongous "binaries" groups as can be found on Usenet (or for testing).

PS it might be quicker to select a range of message (by using the keyboard or Mouse) and then press the Del key to mark all selected messages as deleted.

Thank you I'll give this a try.

This is actually what I usually do ... you have to quickly go to Queued
Requests and cancel the download that starts as soon as you select a group
of messages. Then the connection breaks so, although it works, it can be
a bit of a bother to use.

Thanks very much.

Well, that didn't work. I must be using the wrong wildcards. I'm using
*.rar* which is filesystem wildcards. I managed to unblock the help file
but the section on filters is empty. Any chance you could point me in the
right direction on the correct wildcards to use to enable;
Subject contains ".rar".
Unfortunately the filters dialogue does not have a "contains" option so
I'm hoping that wildcards with the "matches" option will provide the same
results.

Sorry to be a bother ...

There appears to be a bug/feature: the wild cards don't work when you use it both at the begin and at the end of the Filter Text.

Following should work: use as filter - Subject Matches *.rar and the Don't Download option.

Ahh ... OK, I'll try that.

Just for information, as Filter Text you can also use:
*.rar OR *.par2 OR *.nzb OR *.sfv OR *.nfo
to filter other filename extensions used in subject lines.

This has been working great and [of course] I've decided to fiddle with
things to see if I can be more efficient - for no good reason. If I break
my filter text down into separate filters does short circuit evaluation
[of sorts] come into effect?

If I have the first rule as No Compressed Files as above and then a second
filter of No Movie Files [*.par2 OR *.divx OR *.mp3 OR mp4 OR *.wmv OR
*.avi] if the No Compressed Files rule fires as true will the filtering
mechanism bypass the remaining filters?
[ hope that makes sense ]

Thanks,
